It was six years ago when I started my freelancing career. I was still 18 years old and a student back then trying to earn extra income by doing my internship in the morning and working as a part-time all around virtual assistant dude at night until 2:00 in the morning; I was earning as low as $90/month.
Finding clients before was really hard for me especially that I was still a graduating student; I could only work 4-5 hours per night and I also did not have my own laptop so I worked in an Internet Cafe. For that reason, I was forced to accept low budget projects with so much tasks and complex things to do in it. This scenario happened almost on all of my projects and it was very tiring for me. I even thought of giving up my freelance career instead.
In 2013, a colleague introduced me to the Upwork platform, it was still Odesk back then. Though Upwork was already a popular platform for freelancers before especially here in the Philippines, I was hesitant at first because I thought my skills were not enough to win clients in the platform. However, I was eager to take the next step of my career so I signed up, uploaded some of my previous works, and started applying on available jobs.
To my surprise, after just few days of using Upwork, I already started talking to potential clients and luckily, I got my first contract in a week! From then, my career turned around completely, I started gaining long term clients. My income started to increase dramatically and I was able to find who I really am as a freelancer which is a UX/UI Website Designer.
I was invited in an event to share my story and knowledge about freelancing.
Presently, I am already one of Upworks Top Rated Freelancers with a success rate of 100%! But my success with Upwork does not stop there. I also now manage my own design agency, Six Thousand Design Studio, offering digital design services to entrepreneurs and businesses across the globe.
Since using Upwork, working at home is very convenient and stable.
While I’m a full-time freelancer, I am also a full time brother and parent to my younger siblings as we don’t have anyone supporting our needs. Because of my good income in Upwork, I was able to send them both to college. My sister finally graduated and my brother is graduating this coming March 2019. As someone who grew up without parents, seeing them both slowly becoming successful in their life is probably the best Upwork success story I can share to anyone.
My life story was also featured in Passerelles Numériques Philippines Alumni Stories. You can read the article version here.
